    Eythen, 6 - USA

     

    Religion

    This evening as I was dropping the younger 2 off at Youth Group Eythen says: "Wow Mom, look at that big spikey thing on top of our church."  When I told him it was called a steeple he replied "Oh,I knew that."   Then he adds "Do you think God minds if I still think it looks like a big spikey thing?"

    As I was tucking Eythen into bed this evening when he said to me: "Hey Mom. I think I am gonna feel yucky tomorrow.  So does that mean I can stay up tonight and watch cartoons since I'll be too sick to go to school tomorrow?"

    Harleigh, 8 - USA

     

    Holidays

    This was the note my daughter, Harleigh, left for Santa this year: "Dear Santa, How are you? I am good.  Grammy J. says that I'm an angel, so you will probably be bringing me that collector Dollhouse for Christmas that I want. Mommy says that's a big present. Will it fit in your sleigh? You can bring it the day before Christmas if that would be easier.  I will leave cookies for you and carrots for the reindeer unless Mommy forgets to buy them.  Love Harleigh"

    Parenting Opps

    Clint, my husband, and I were donating  toys this Christmas to the Toys For Tots drive when I suggested we take the kids to the store to let them pick out a toy to donate as well.    Suddenly, Eythen, our son, chimes in saying that he wants to buy a toy for himself.  I went into a "deep" conversation about how some kids don't have toys, or a home to live in, or a Mommy and Daddy to tuck them in at night.  Trying to help her little brother get the point. Breeanna says: "Kind of like how somes people have hair and some people don't have hair."

    This was a conversation I had recently with my daughter, Harleigh.  She said excitedly "Mommy, good news.  Last night at basketball practice I learned to shoot the ball like the KU basketball players do.  You know with one hand and jumping off of one foot.   The only problem is that I can't jump as high or dunk the ball either.  My legs are just to short.  What do those boys eat to make them jump so high?"

    I got the flu on Sunday.  So my thoughtful (and opportunistic) son, Eythen, asked if he could stay home from school today to take care of me.  I thought it was such a heart warming gesture until he added "Is it okay if I play with my Wii and trains all day unless you need something really important like Sprite?"

    This morning I was asked to go on a lunch date at the school cafeteria by my adorable little five year-old.  As I walked into the cafeteria, my son greeted me with a smile and tried to make me feel welcomed by saying  "Mommy, the school lunches are so good. I know you are going to like it better than the food you cook. I know I do."

    I walked past the bathroom to find my son, Eythen, with his foot in the toilet. When I asked him what in the world was he doing, he replied in his innoncent little voice "I was just wanting to know if the water is hot or cold in there." When I asked him why he stuck his foot in the toilet instead of his hand to find out he replied with "My foot seemed funner."

    My daughter, Harleigh, asked "Mommy, how do animals get the babies out of their tummies?"  Not ready for the birds and the bees talk, I lied and said "I'm not sure."  Refusing to give up, Harleigh said "Maybe Daddy knows?"  I replied "I am pretty sure Daddy has no idea where babies come from."  Harleigh nodded "I gues that makes sense since Mommies know everything and Daddies work hard."  My son overheard our conversation and decided to defend the male race by saying "I know where they come from... Babies come out of your butt.   Where else could they come out?"

    At lunch today, Eythen asked me if all of the Mommy's in the world were smart. I told him that Mommy's are really smart and know just about everything there is to know. He looked at me, with a very curious smile, and said "Then what would happen if I put ketchup in milk? Because I really wanna try it to see what will happen.  Maybe it will turn into paint?"  So I replied "Mommies like me are so smart we already know what will happen, you'll make a mess."

    Saturday night, Clint had invited a group of guys to come over and play poker out in the garage for the evening. I had asked Clint who was coming over, and he was in the process of telling me who was a "for sure", "maybe" or "arriving late".  Suddenly, Harleigh  throws a tantrum for no apparent reason until finally telling Clint through her tears "Why do you get a sleepover? Because that is no fair.  I asked Mommy if I could have a sleepover before you did."

    Eythen recently told me that he doesn't have to pick up his room.  Why, you might ask? Well, according to my son "Isn't that what Moms do? Dads build things and fix toilets. Moms clean and shop." I want to extend an apology to Eythen's future wife right now.
